Why Singing?

At creation, God placed His image in each one of us – Genesis 1:27 “So, God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.”

We are image bearers of God whether we acknowledge Him or not and with that comes an innate desire in us to create, to cultivate and to love. When we choose to pursue God, we discover so many characteristics of His that we try to imitate but do we know that He is a singing God?

That’s right – Zephaniah 3:17 says:
“The Lord your God is with you; he is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you, he will quiet you with his love, he will rejoice over you with singing.”

Just picture a small child in its mothers’ arms falling asleep to her lullaby. It’s like there’s this innate response in us to sing over babies…anyone experienced that? It’s like we just know there’s something soothing about it, something loving.

And what do we do when there’s a birthday? When celebrating our National Teams appearance in a sporting event? Singing is in our DNA! And just like the deep desire in us to create, cultivate and love we need to look to the source of singing, to see how to truly outwork it.

As someone who loves to sing and as someone who sings A LOT, my children naturally sing – it’s like it’s woven into their nature after years of being sang over.

Could it be that the more time we spend with God, the more we listen to His singing over us, the more we become formed to respond to life with singing – His melody!?

Reading Gods word repeatedly helps it to get into our memory and it’s the same with songs. We need to soak ourselves in songs that speak God’s word over us. God is good and all He made is good. We can measure all things against that. Do the songs we listen to encourage the image of God?

“Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly…through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.” Col 3:16

There are so many words, so many messages, so many melodies. We need to use God’s word to guide our listening so that we are being filled with good things – and good things only come from Him!

So why do we sing? – because God sings. He has made us in His image and so we imitate Him.

When we gather, we sing together but I want to encourage you to sing every day! Then when we join, it is the overflow of your singing and not the only time you do it.

Singing is a form of worship. Our breath is from God and He owns the melody, so we just give it back to Him.

So today, this week, this month, this year why not make the words of Psalm 104:33 your reality which says: “I will sing to the Lord all my life; I will sing praise to my God as long as I live.” AMEN!

(And for those who feel like they can’t sing in the technical sense of the word – please know that to God, singing is just an outward expression of what is happening inside. He is more interested in the state of your heart than the sound of your voice!).
